COMMUNITY SENIORSERV HITS SERVICE MILESTONE…1,100 HOMEBOUND SENIORS SERVED BY MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM
As the older adult population in Orange County continues to grow the demand for senior services continues to increase. Community SeniorServ, Inc., a non-profit, social service organization has provided nutritious home delivered meals (meals on wheels) since 1967 to senior citizens age 60 or older, homebound by reason of illness or disability, and who have difficulty shopping and preparing meals.
Good nutrition and meal consistency are major contributors to the quality of life of America’s aging population. Research has repeatedly demonstrated the importance of nutrition and its impact on the health and well-being of older adults. Missed meals and lack of necessary nutrients in the daily eating habits of seniors reduces their ability to function independently and safely, and requires extensive use of health care resources.
Meals on Wheels clients receive three meals a day, five days per week all year long. Clients also receive case management support and if needed in-home support services such as personal care, homemaking and chore support.
In the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2009, Community SeniorServ delivered more than 800,000 home delivered meals and we are on track to deliver 865,000 meals this fiscal year.
Community SeniorServ also operates the largest Senior Congregate Lunch Program in Orange County. We provide hot, nutritious lunches at 27 senior centers in central and north Orange County that are enjoyed by active seniors, who visit their local senior center to enjoy social activities, exercise classes and field trips.
Community SeniorServ owns and operates three Adult Day Centers in the county that offer a safe, nurturing affordable option for those in need of daily supervision. The centers provide a holistic approach meeting participant’s socialization needs, reducing isolation, as well as medical/therapeutic needs, improving health, and mental and physical acuity.
